Home Electronics Energy Savings
Home electronics, including computers, computer peripherals, entertainment systems, small appliances, battery chargers, etc. can use a lot of electricity when turned on, and can also use electricity even when turned off. Proper energy management techniques with home electronics can provide significant savings.
1. Computers and computer peripherals use a considerable amount of electricity.
a. Turn off your computer, monitor and printer when not in use, particularly at night when you go to bed. This will not only save on electricity but will increase the life of the electronic device. And remember, even if your computer is turned off, the AC adapter is stilling using electricity. An easy way to do this is to plug each of these items into a power strip (ideally one with surge protection) and just flip the off switch on the power strip. However, make sure you power down the computer before flipping the switch. If you want to save even more, unplug the power strip since even it consumes electricity.
b. Make sure the power management features of computers and peripherals are enabled, and are set to activate in a relatively short amount of time when the computer or peripheral is not actively in use.
c. Reduce the amount of time your computer uses a screen saver before it goes into standby or sleep mode. If you are using your computer as a server and leave it on, make sure you turn off the monitor when not needed.
d. Consider turning off your broadband modem and router when not in use to save even more electricity.
e. Consider buying a laptop rather than a desktop computer since they use much less
electricity. If you do have a desktop, note that an LCD monitor uses about one-
f. Look for Energy Star computers and peripherals when buying new equipment to make sure the equipment is energy efficient.
2. The energy usage of home entertainment electronics and small appliances also needs to be managed for savings. In some homes, 75% of the power used to power home electronics is consumed when they are turned off.
a. TV’s, DVD players and other home entertainment devices still use a fair amount of power when plugged in but off. Consider plugging these devices into power strips and turn off the power strip when they are not in use.
b. Many small appliances also continue to draw power when they are switched off. Unplug battery chargers, cell phones, and other small appliances when not in use.
c. If you use batteries often, consider investing in rechargeable batteries and a battery charger to save. Solar powered battery chargers are also available.
d. Look for the Energy Star label when buying home electronics.
